Arthur James Lyon Fremantle
Arthur James Lyon Fremantle (1835-1901) was a British soldier, a member of the Coldstream Guards, and a notable British witness to the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. As captain and lieutenant colonel, he spent three months in North America, traveling through parts of the Confederate States of America and the Union. His book, Three Months in the Southern States, chronicles his experiences in the American South during this period. In 1882, he was promoted to major-general and from 1884 to 1885 was governor of North Eastern Sudan in Egypt. Fremantle later served as governor of Malta for five years. He was knighted for the first of two times in 1894.
