John Sanford was a screenwriter and author who wrote twenty-four books. He was a one-time member of the Communist Party, and after he and his wife Marguerite Roberts refused to testify to the House Un-American Activities Committee, they were blacklisted in Hollywood for nearly a decade. He died in 2003 at age ninety-eight.
